Question:
Need advice about my daughter?

I had to leave work early today to pick up my kid from daycare. She threw up 4 times at the place. This is the 4th time this year she has had some kind of bug in her system. Last year we had to hospitalize her cause she absolutely could not keep anything down. I gave her some anti nausea medication, but she still threw it up. So she really hasn't had anything in her tummy today.

Obviously I know I'm going to have to take her to the Dr. or hospital, but she doesn't have a fever, although she has or is getting rid of a cold. Thing is I know when I finally take her in, the Dr. will just tell me to give her Pedialite and to keep an eye on her, blah blah blah. I need something that can work now. She hasn't got the runs, she just keeps throwing everything up and does not want to drink or eat anything. I asked the lady at the daycare how she was and of course she ate the same thing everyone else ate, and no one had any problems.

If you're a mom out there with this kind of experience, could ya help a mom out. Do you think she needs a blood test or allergy test? What types of questions should I ask the Dr. when I take her in?

My daughter is only 2 BTW.

Here's a pic, just for reference...well , just cause she's adorable...

My doctor always recommended the BRAT (bananas, rice, apple juice, toast) diet when my son's stomach was upset. He also told me that when he was vomiting to give them a tablespoon of the heavy syrup that comes in canned fruit (not the kind that comes in water, it has to be fruit "in heavy syrup"). He said to give them the syrup (1 tablespoon) every 15 minutes until the vomiting stopped. It's supposed to neutralize the stomach acid and calm things down. Thankfully, he hasn't thrown up in the last 2 years, but the last time I tried this it worked. My other son (4) has actually never vomited (yet)...

As for what to ask the doctor - does he think this is viral, an allergic reaction, or some sort of intestinal condition. If you feel like he's giving you more info than you can process at once, as if he has any printed literature that you can take home.

Good luck!

Is the daycare the only place she throws up? If it is you may want to consider moving her to another daycare site. You need to be confident that the site is safe, she's not getting into anything, and this is not a stress reaction to the site. Either way, definitely see a doctor. She shouldn't be throwing up this much.

Go to her pediatrician and ask for a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist. This is a doctor that specializes in the stomach and intestines. He will have the expertise to make sure there is no structural abnormality causing the vomiting.

I was very similar to your daughter, throwing up frequently and missing a lot of school. It was always dismissed as a nervous stomach. I never ran a fever and never had the runs. It wasn't until I was an adult that I was diagnosed with a small defect in my colon, which I would have been born with. I now live a completely normal life since it was corrected.

Best of luck

I learned this past year, that you have to take control of your health and that of your family members. No one else will do it for you, if that makes sense.

I got to the point, where I could care less what the Dr. said..I went with my gut, and kept going until I finally got the answers.

I guess I'm saying, do not give up. IF you really feel like something else could be going on, pursue it.

I think a blood panel, possibly urine and poop culture would be a great place to start. If your regular pediatrician isn't doing anything, move on to a specialist.

I'm with Phat Woman, go with your gut. As a mom, it will not lead you astray.

Oh, and crushed ice is good...just a teaspoon full or so at a time.

Sick child HORROR STORY:

I have never sent my kids to day care but last year my daughter who has never had a ear infection suddenly had 14 ear infections and strep 11 times (19 trips to the drs and 15 er visits) . After she missed over 3 mo of school (full day pre school) and all her therapy (speech and ot) i finally got her dr to send her to a ENT but they would NOT do nothing. After that i had to have a full hearing eval done on her since her therapists were questioning me if she was hearing ok.

It seemed like it was never going to end. The poor child would not even be off her meds and i would be back in the er or the drs office. I just could not get a handle on it. it was a horrible mess.

Im hoping you are not going to start going through what i went through last year. I wish you the best of luck( your going to need it since it now sick child season) Give your baby girl lots of ♥ and i hope she will be just fine in a day or two.

My daughter came home wiht the same thing yesterday. Stomach bugs have to run their course. Do not give her anything for 20 minutes after she throws up. Then allow her some tiny sips of water or other clear liquid, if she wants. Wait another 20 minutes. If she keeps that down, allow some more liquid. If she just keeps throwing up, just try to make her comfortable, talk to her, keep her company, let her watch some TV.

Don't force any meds on her or any food or liquid if her stomach is rejecting everything. Let it rest.

anytime a child becomes lethargic, they need to see a doctor asap. take her to the emergency room. i wish i could tell you what is wrong but i just dont know. last year when my daughter was 2 months she kept throwing up, no diarhea, couldn't keep down her meds for an ear infection, and was lethargic. i took her to the er when her breathing became shallow. she had gotten rsv and was hospitalized for 4 days. once she got on an iv she started perking up. she was dehydrated and on oxygen. it may not seem like a big deal at first but once it gets worse you need to take her in. the most they can say is she's ok and then at least you know.

sounds like that tummy virus thats going around

i know its hard to say but try not feeding her anything just make sure she dont get dehydrated

when you feed her it makes the virus stay longer

see if you can find some other kind of a way to take care of your daughter besides daycare for now if you can

i know its hard friend but this illness has to run its course

should only last a day or two at the most

not criticizing you or anything but daycares are bad news for sicknesses because if one kid gets it they all get it

I saw a thing on mystery diagnosis where the mast cells in the stomach overproduced histamine and this makes for horrible GI symptoms, like IBS in adults and severe GI problems in children. Mastocytosis it was called.

i would take her in for testing. go with your gut on this one. something doesn't sound right.
