You could make it a christmas theme birthday where everyone gets presents, small ones at that, but everyone loves christmas..

I would do a pin the nose on rudolph.(if you're artistic)

Tree decorating contests, (coloring contest)

draw a christmas tree copy it and have the kids color and decorate it.

Have the kids decorate ornaments to take home for their trees.

Just some ideas

It depends how you feel about any type of play gun that your soon to be five year old might be playing with. Why I say that is because my son had a fantastic party with a couple of things, first we had pizza as the main course, than several games, one was pin the tail on whatever animal your child wants to make up, then we set up a table of army men and used those play guns with the foam attached to the darts to knock them down and see which team won, and then we passed around Mr. Pototo Head (who is electronic now and talks) - the kids go wild throwing him around because you do not want to be caught with Hot Pototo and then we had a pinata, which the guys loved. It is all a matter of sitting down and thinking of some great games to play (and do not forget the prizes for the kids that won, can just be little things, like cars, etc.) Even if you have a stick, the kids came play limbo. Kids love to play any type of game. That is their favorite part of the party. I then served cake and ice cream and we opened the gifts and each child got a nice goody bag before they left. It was a great party for my son.

I wait to open the gifts until last because I do not want everyone playing with my children's presents. This way they can enjoy the games and food and the presents can wait until last. You never know if something might get lost if you open presents first.

I read about this idea in Martha Stewart - a messy party! Make sure you have an area in your kitchen/basement that can be easily cleaned. But have the kids wear little aprons and make their own colourful playdoh........then fingerpaint. Goody bags can include their pladoh, some cookie cutters and a little roller.

Maybe have everyone go outside for a snowball fight, or take them out to build snowmen and have all of the necessary items [carrots, raisins, coal, scarves, lol] and then have them all come inside for some soup and grilled cheese. Then the standard cake and stuff.
